Geisinger's Medical Center's adult critical care service is a section of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care. The Adult Shock Trauma Unit is located on the fifth floor of the Abigail Geisinger Pavilion (AGP5).

The Cardiac Care Unit and the Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Unit is a separate unit under the direction of Cardiology and is located on AGP4.

The Shock Trauma Unit is a 16-bed Critical Care Unit where patients can be cared for who need 24-hour physician care and critical life support. There is an adjacent 14-bed step-down or Intermediate Care Unit where patients are cared for who still require intensive care, but who no longer need life support technology or continuous physician presence.

State-of-the-art medical technology and monitoring equipment is utilized in our recently remodeled modern facility. This is a level 1 Resource Trauma Center serviced by two Life Flight helicopters. Despite the use of state-of-the-art technology, the key to the success of our program lies in the expertise of our tightly integrated multidisciplinary staff and the individualized care we provide for our patients on a minute-to-minute, hour-by-hour, and day-by-day basis.

Our specialty staff is present in the unit 24 hours/day, 7 days/week. They are assisted by resident staff physicians, physician assistants, an expert nursing staff, consultation as needed by our specialty staff, and by a dedicated group of respiratory therapists.

The unit is a closed unit and all patients are managed primarily by our Critical Care staff and Trauma Surgery staff physicians. Several of our Critical Care physicians were awarded the peer distinction of being among The Best Physicians in America.
