Camp Horizon offers children with chronic dermatologic conditions the opportunity to experience summer camp and support each other in a setting of acceptance, love and fun. The camp was established in 1994 and the first camp was held in the summer of 1995. This initial venture hosted 18 children for a four-day camp with a staff of about 15 volunteers. Since that time, the camp has expanded to a full week and has grown to over 80 campers and a staff of more than 65 volunteers. Camp Horizon takes place from Saturday to Saturday in mid-August at Camp Victory in Millville, PA. The 35-acre campsite features 10 sleeping cabins, a large mess hall, outdoor activity pavilions, a fishing and paddleboat pond, a low-ropes course, a pool and a fully equipped infirmary. Funding for Camp Horizon comes from many sources including private donations, pharmaceutical companies, service organizations, Geisinger Dermatology fund raising events and the Children's Miracle Network Telethon. No tuition is charged for children to attend camp, and transportation costs are covered. In 1998, Camp Horizon became an official site for the American Academy of Dermatology's Camp Discovery program. Camp Horizon is a totally volunteer-run organization. Various forms of help are required to operate the camp. Volunteers are needed to help pick up and drop off campers at the Harrisburg airport, run specific activities, be part of the medical team or do odd jobs. The staff works as a team with everyone pitching in to help wherever needed. The greatest Camp Horizon staffing need is for counselors. This position offers the closest and most rewarding contact with the campers. Even though there is no salary, transportation, food and lodging are all covered. Anyone who loves children and cares for their physical and emotional well being makes a great Camp Horizon counselor. It is an especially rewarding experience for adults and older teenagers with skin diseases themselves. Dermatology residents, medical students, premedical students and college students studying for careers in nursing, physical therapy and education all have found Camp Horizon to be a great experience. |
