Camp Horizon
Staff

howard pride, md. camp horizon co-director

Howard Pride, Co-director
In 1994, Howard Pride became the president of the Camp Horizon Steering Committee, a varied group of dedicated individuals organized with the vision to develop a camp for kids with skin disorders in central Pennsylvania. In 1995, the first camp began and Dr. Pride has served as co-director of Camp Horizon every summer since. In addition, Dr. Pride has been a camp doctor at the American Academy of Dermatology’s Camp Discovery as well as chairman of the committee that oversees the Academy’s various camps. He completed medical school at the University of Vermont, and is currently a full time pediatric dermatologist at the Geisinger Medical Center where he stayed on

after completing his pediatric and dermatology training. Camp is a family affair for the Prides. Dr. Pride’s wife, Kathy, has been in charge of organizing camp activities and daughters, Tianna and Nicole, have been to camp every summer since birth, and are now annual campers themselves.
andrea zaenglein, md, camp horizon medical directo

Andrea Zaenglein, Medical Director
Moving from camp counselor to the Med Shed, Andrea Zaenglein has been the Medical Director at Camp Horizon since1999. When she is not bandaging blisters or encouraging more fiber, Andrea is a pediatric dermatologist at Penn State/Hershey Medical Center. Before that, she completed a fellowship at New York University, dermatology residency at Hahnemann University and medical training at Penn State University. She lives on farmette in Deodate, PA with a varied bunch of critters, including her husband, Trevor, and dog, Francis. In 2005, there was a new addition to the Med Shed staff, her young son Max, who plans to one day become a camper himself.

annie houser, camp horizon co-directorAnnie Houser, Co-director
Annie Houser has co-directed Camp Horizon since 1995 and has served on the Camp Horizon Steering Committee since 1994.  Annie is currently teaching cultural anthropology and sociology at Penn State University and Lehigh Carbon Community College.  In addition, she attends Temple University in Philadelphia as a graduate student working toward a doctorate degree in cultural anthropology with a focus on anthropology of childhood.  A wife and mother, Annie's husband Don attends camp as an assistant director of activities and daughters Stevie and Maddi have attended camp since its inception in 1995.
karl koeller, camp horizonKarl Koeller, Assistant Director
This will be Karl Koeller’s fifth year as Assistant Director at Camp Horizon following five years of being a camp counselor. Having atopic dermatitis himself reaffirms the need for places like Camp Horizon for children and adults and the one week each year is a welcome challenge and a very rewarding experience. During the other 51 weeks, Karl celebrates the two loves of his life in the beautiful Hudson Valley of upstate New York:  performing as principal tympanist for two community orchestras and a wind ensemble and his artwork.  Both loves are supported by his jobs as struggling artist, freelance graphics designer and administrative consultant.
breck artz, camp horizon counselorBreck Artz, Assistant Direector
Breck Artz has served as Assistant Director at Camp Horizon since 2002, after volunteering as a camp counselor for four years.  She also serves on the Camp Horizon Steering Committee.  Breck has psoriasis and is therefore very motivated toward making camp a wonderful and exceptional experience for both campers and staff.  Camp Horizon has found a deep love in Breck’s heart.  She wishes more specialized programs existed for children to feel “normal” for once in their lives.
Breck is currently a graduate student with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where she is working on her master’s degree in Youth Development.
Having more than 10 years of experience in the social service/non-profit world has definitely benefited Breck’s ability to supervise and develop Camp Horizon to be a fantastic camp experience for everyone.  While attending graduate school, Breck is a Mary Kay consultant. Born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Breck cherishes her family and having the opportunity to be close to them.  AmeriCorps (national volunteer service) moved her to California in 2004-2005, but her longing to be back with her family moved her back home to Lancaster.  Her dog, Taiyhia, and two cats, Sebastian and Reesie, are her rowdy kids at home.
