Geisinger’s ophthalmology specialists are highly skilled in treating cataracts, a condition that clouds the lens of the eye, decreasing normal vision. The Eye Surgery Education Council estimates that about 60 percent of those older than 60 and 70 percent of those older than 75 have cataracts.
The good news is that Geisinger offers state-of-the-art surgical treatment and technology for cataracts. Most patients find that their sight is restored to at least the degree of vision they experienced before developing the cataracts.

Kendal Dobbins, MD, describes the cataract and refractive surgery options available at Geisinger.
Using “small incision” surgery, the cataract is removed and replaced with an intraocular lens — a monofocal lens for seeing things at one set distance or a multifocal lens for a variety of distances. The procedure takes about 20 minutes, discomfort is minimal, and visual recovery is rapid.
