Avoiding surgery whenever possible
Through innovative techniques and equipment, we help hundreds of children every year avoid traditional surgery. Our specialists in interventional radiology perform very complex procedures, all with the tiniest of incisions. And by bringing this level of expertise to central Pennsylvania, children heal more quickly, and can return home to family and friends.
Interventional radiologists use X-rays and ultrasound images to guide small medical devices through veins, for example, or to an area of the body for biopsy. Some procedures help physicians to diagnose a child’s conditions. Others procedures are part of treatment for a variety of conditions.
Common procedures that our interventional radiologists perform include:
- Placement of a long-term IV, called a PICC line, into the arm, for medicines, fluids, and other treatment
- Biopsies
- Drainage of an abscess
- Catheters
- Feeding tubes
Working alongside these specialists are members of our pediatric sedation team, to help children remain comfortable and calm.
