Geisinger’s Geriatric Fracture Care Program brings together medical specialists across disciplines to provide some of the nation’s most advanced care for older patients with broken bones. Best of all, care is available 24/7 simply by visiting Geisinger’s Emergency Department.
The Geriatric Fracture Care program is one of only a few programs in the nation that’s entirely dedicated to caring for seniors with broken bones – and it’s the only such program in northeastern Pennsylvania.
Geriatric Fracture Care
Anthony J. Balsamo, MD, Director of the Geisinger Geriatric Fracture Care Program on what makes Geisinger Geriatric Care unique.
With a dedicated nurse coordinator to guide patients through the care process – which is based on evidence-based care protocols that medical literature shows speeds care, decreases complications and improves outcomes – Geisinger patients can be assured of high quality care from a full team of experts.
Emergency physicians, hospitalists, rheumatologists and orthopaedic surgeons experienced in caring for fragility fractures work together with nurses, pharmacists, care managers and rehabilitation therapists to provide complete care for older patients from the moment a patient arrives at the emergency room.
The care process continues to include surgery when appropriate, inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation, and counseling and follow-up appointments with Geisinger’s acclaimed High Risk Osteoporosis Clinic to help keep bones healthy and avoid fractures in the future.
Geisinger’s electronic medical record keeps each member of the team informed with up-to-the-minute patient information and helps the team communicate with each other about the next step of care.
