Geriatric Fracture Care

Geisinger Medical Center (GMC) and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center (GWV) are two of the first five hospitals in the country to receive CORE Certification from the International Geriatric Fracture Society (IGFS). The CORE Certification Program is a global quality improvement initiative designed to recognize the achievements of geriatric fracture programs that exceed outcomes benchmarks in the management of elderly and fragility fractures.

This certification is the first of its kind to recognize health care organizations which display a commitment to improving the way fragile geriatric fractures are managed from prevention to surgical care and all the way through recovery and regaining quality of life.

Founded in 2012, the IGFS is a non-profit, 501(c)6 designated organization whose membership includes some of the world's premier thought leaders on geriatric fracture care management. The mission of the Society is to be recognized as the foremost international authority for collaboration on the delivery of evidenced-based, patient-centered care for the treatment of geriatric or fragility fractures.

Geriatric Fracture Care

Anthony J. Balsamo, MD, Director of the Geisinger Geriatric Fracture Care Program on what makes Geisinger Geriatric Care unique.

Geisinger's Geriatric Fracture Care Program brings dedicated and experienced medical specialists together, including nurse coordinators, nurses, emergency physicians, hospitalists, rheumatologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and more, to guide patients through the care process and provide advanced care for older patients with broken bones. This program is one of only a few programs in the nation that is entirely dedicated to caring for seniors.

The geriatric fracture care process is based on evidence-based care protocols that speeds recovery, decreases complications and improves outcomes. The care process continues to include surgery when appropriate, inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation, and counseling and follow-up appointments with Geisinger's acclaimed High Risk Osteoporosis Clinic to help keep bones healthy and avoid fractures in the future.
