Neonatology
The Department of Neonatology operates a 38-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) immediately adjacent to the Labor and Delivery suites on Lower Level 1 in the Janet Weis Children's Hospital. Our location permits immediate response to urgent deliveries, and emergency neonatal resuscitation in the NICU, when necessary.

Staffing
The NICU is staffed 24 hours a day by neonatologists, staff physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners, neonatal nurses, and respiratory therapists. Newborns hospitalized in the NICU most commonly suffer from prematurity, infections, heart disease, or other surgical problems noted after birth.

Transfers
Newborns from outlying hospitals are transferred by the Neonatal Transport Team to the NICU via Life Flight helicopter or via Janet Weis Children's Hospital Ambulance. Physicians may arrange for transfer at any time, day or night, by calling the NICU at (570) 271-6550 and speaking to the neonatologist on call.

Pre-delivery consultations available
For moms-to-be who are expected to deliver an infant requiring specialized newborn care, neonatology consultations are available in the Janet Weis Women's Pavillion. Outpatient consultations for women preparing for pregnancy are also available upon referral from Geisinger's Maternal-Fetal Medicine Department.

Family-centered care
Our staff believes that providing information and emotional support to the family of a newborn in the NICU is important. That’s why we are proud to host an innovative new program focused on families called March of Dimes Family Support.

Special features
Neonatal Apnea Clinic - an infant requiring a home apnea monitor is seen by our apnea team within 2 months of discharge. Appointments for apnea evaluation for a patient nor hospitalized in our NICU may be made by referral from the patient's primary care physician or by calling the department secretary at (570) 271-8091.

Neonatal Growth and Development Clinic - to detect a possible developmental delay of low birth weight infant (less than 3 pounds, 5 ounces at birth) and begin early intervention, a specially-trained pediatric team assesses the infant about four months after the infant's expected due date. Ronald McDonald House, located near Knapper Clinic on the Geisinger Medical Center campus - offers lodging for parents wishing to stay during their infant's hospitalization. To make a reservation call (570) 271-6300.

Transitioning home - for an infant expected to be discharged with special needs, the NICU staff maintains two private rooms equipped with infant monitoring equipment and conveniences for the family. These rooms are for parents to spend one or more days prior to discharge completely caring for their infant while the NICU staff is available to assist or answer questions.

Many parents have found this experience highly valuable to become comfortable caring for their newborn baby.

We offer a full complement of medical and surgical specialties to care for infants in the NICU, including:

  • Conventional and high-frequency ventilation
  • Surfactant treatment of RDS
  • Nitric Oxide for pulmonary hypertension
nicu nurses caring for premature baby
  • Percutaneous central line placement for maximum IV nutrition
  • Continuous heart and respiratory monitoring
  • Pneumogram evaluation for apnea
