The Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) Program is a transplant option for recipients who have a willing and able living donor but are an incompatible match due to blood or tissue type.
A paired donation results when one donor (Donor A) is willing to donate to a recipient (Candidate A) but cannot due to incompatibility. KPD will help locate another incompatible pair (Donor B and Candidate B) to result in a positive cross-match for each pair, see the two-way exchange illustration below.
Sometimes, more than two compatible pairs can be matched to each other and more life-saving transplants can be performed, such as a three-way kidney exchange illustrated below.
The paired donation program will try to identify as many compatible pairs as possible and maximize the number of transplants performed while focusing on specific populations, such as children and highly sensitized patients.
