- Surgeons remove the diseased organ and transplant the healthy, donated organ.
- Nephrologists diagnose and care for kidney and pancreas transplant patients before and after surgery.
- Gastroenterologists/hepatologists diagnose and care for liver transplant patients before and after surgery.
- Radiologists use imaging equipment, such as X-ray, CT scan and MRI to help in the diagnosis of organ conditions.
- Cardiologists ensure a patient’s heart is healthy before and after surgery.
- Urologists diagnose and care for kidney transplant patients before and after surgery. They also perform the surgery on living donor patients robotically.
- Physician assistants and nurse practitioners help during surgery and care for transplant patients before and after the procedure.
- Anesthesiologists monitor sedation, heartbeat, blood pressure and breathing during surgery and help manage pain afterwards.
- Pathologists examine body tissue or cells for abnormalities.
- Transplant coordinators are highly trained and experienced nurses who provide care and communication during the entire process of transplant surgery. They are on call 7 days a week, 24 hours a day to answer questions or concerns.
- Dieticians help patients and their families with diet concerns like decreased appetite, weight loss and diet supplements.
- Social workers coordinate services for patients and families, and provide education.
