Breastfeeding Education
At Geisinger, we promote and encourage breastfeeding. All our breastfeeding babies are allowed to nurse within one half hour after birth, encouraging natural newborn instincts.
Mother’s milk contains just the right amount of calories, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals to support your baby’s growth and development. It contains antibodies that protect your infant from ear infections and promotes strong bones, among other benefits.
Lactation support services
Geisinger is staffed with six lactation nurses, including International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs) to help new mothers and fathers learn about breastfeeding. Services offered include prenatal consultations, ongoing telephone support and return visit consultation seven days after leaving the hospital. This return visit consultation is unique to Geisinger.

Lactation Guidelines
Geisinger’s breastfeeding education program has earned recognition as a Model Hospital for Breastfeeding Policies by the Pennsylvania Breastfeeding Coalition. We follow the World Health Organization (WHO)/Unicef guidelines to promote and support the benefits of breastfeeding to our new mothers.
