Staying Strong Against Osteoporosis
The National Osteoporosis Foundation estimates that more than eight million American women have osteoporosis, sometimes called the “brittle bone disease.” It’s caused by loss of bone density, which can cause bones to snap easily with just the slightest bump or brush against an object.
Geisinger offers mobile DXA scanning (dual X-ray screening to measure bone mineral loss) at several of our locations, as well as ultrasounds of the heel. By identifying risk early, and taking advantage of current treatments and preventative measures, you may avoid future bone loss problems. Your family physician or gynecologist can determine when it is best for you to have these tests, depending on your age and other risk factors.
