Karen Davis, PhD, was appointed to the Geisinger Health Board of Directors in November 2004. Dr. Davis is the Chair of the Patient Experience, Academic Affairs and Quality Committee and serves on the Governance and Emergency Action committees of the board. Dr. Davis is also a member of the Geisinger Health Plan, Geisinger Quality Options Inc., and Geisinger Indemnity Insurance Company Board of Directors since 2010.

Dr. Davis is currently the Eugene and Mildred Lipitz professor in the department of health policy and management and director of the Roger C. Lipitz Center for Integrated Health Care at the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Davis has served as president of The Commonwealth Fund, chairman of the department of health policy and management at The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and deputy assistant secretary for health policy in the Department of Health and Human Services.

Prior to her government career, she was a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C., a visiting lecturer at Harvard University, and an assistant professor of economics at Rice University. Dr. Davis has published a number of significant books, monographs and articles on health and social policy issues.

Dr. Davis is a member of the Henry Ford Hospital and Health Network Board of Trustees. She was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1975, has served two terms on the IOM Governing Council, and served as a member of the IOM Committee on Redesigning Health Insurance Benefits, Payment and Performance Improvement Programs. Dr. Davis is past president of AcademyHealth and an AcademyHealth distinguished fellow; and formerly a member of the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, the New York City Mayor’s Commission on Women’s Issues, and the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research National Advisory Committee.

A native of Oklahoma, Dr. Davis received her PhD in economics from Rice University and received an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Johns Hopkins University. She resides in Washington, D.C.
