Geisinger chief data officer makes ‘16 healthcare data-driven geeks to watch’ list

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

DANVILLE, PA – Nicholas Marko, M.D., chief data officer, Geisinger Health System, a neurosurgeon who serves as Geisinger Medical Center’s director of neurosurgical oncology, has been named to the list of “16 healthcare data-driven geeks to watch” by the magazine Healthcare IT News, the healthcare information technology industry’s leading news source.

With emphasis on big data and data analytics growing in the healthcare industry, the magazine’s editors highlighted some of the data-driven professionals they’re watching for potential breakthroughs from in the years ahead.

The magazine describes Dr. Marko as a data scientist with expertise in predictive analytics, organizational data strategy, data-driven collaboration and data science consulting.

He heads the department of data science and engineering in Geisinger’s division of applied research and clinical informatics. He also co-directs the High Performance Computing Center in Geisinger’s Institute for Advanced Applications.

Dr. Marko’s academic interests include integration of diverse data sources and application of advanced mathematical methods and modeling strategies to generate measurable value for organizations in the healthcare sector and beyond.

“Our [Geisinger’s] analytics are varied and cover basically all parts of the spectrum. Obviously we support a lot of routine business needs, including thousands of reporting and dashboarding functions that are executed regularly,” Dr. Marko said.  “The more exciting part lies beyond that, where we are working with newer data types and more modern strategies to try to extract the most value from our data.

“There is a lot going on with data and analytics here at Geisinger, and we’ve got our fingers in just about everything that’s out there at the moment trying to find the best ways to connect this with the world of patient care,” he said.

Dr. Marko’s clinical practice focuses on surgical management of patients with malignant brain and spine tumors.

He will speak at the Healthcare IT News-HIMSS Media Big Data & Healthcare Analytics Forum, Thursday and Friday, June 18 and 19 in New York City.
