Approximately $3.6 billion since FY 2001
DANVILLE, PA -- Geisinger Health System provided $580.2 million in community support in fiscal year 2015 in the form of free, uncompensated care to patients who could not afford to pay; the provision of care for the elderly and the poor not paid by Medicare or Medicaid; allied health medical residency and fellowship educational programs; healthcare research; community health education and outreach programs.
The $580.2 million represents 14.66 percent of Geisinger’s total operating expenses and is nearly three times what is required to meet Pennsylvania’s standards as a charitable mission. From fiscal year 2001 through fiscal year 2015, Geisinger has provided approximately $3.6 billion in community benefit.
“In addition to caring for our patients, we are also deeply committed to caring for our community,” said Geisinger President and Chief Executive Officer David T. Feinberg, M.D., MBA. “We take pride in our patient care, education, research, and community service mission, and are pleased that our efforts help to make our communities great places to live, work and have a family.”
Geisinger employs approximately 30,000 people and serves as a major driver of the economy. The Hospital and HealthSystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) recently reported that Geisinger Health System has an annual positive impact of $9.9 billion on the state economy. When combined with the $635 million annual positive impact on the New Jersey economy by AtlantiCare, a member of Geisinger Health System, Geisinger’s total economic impact in Pennsylvania and New Jersey is more than $10.5 billion. AtlantiCare is not included in the health system’s most recent community benefit calculation because it joined the health system after fiscal year 2015 ended.
“We continue to focus on doing what is right and best for our patients, employees, and community, and ensuring that compassionate and professional healthcare is available in the communities we serve,” said Geisinger Executive Vice President Lynn Miller.
