Nationally accredited program offers customized, multidisciplinary care for severely obese patients
MT. POCONO, Pa. -- Ryan Horsley, D.O., minimally invasive/bariatric surgeon, is now offering bariatric surgery consultations at Geisinger’s Mt. Pocono clinic, 126 Market Way, Mt. Pocono.
Fellowship trained in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery, Dr. Horsley specializes in the latest weight loss surgery techniques, including Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. Dr. Horsley also leads Geisinger Community Medical Center’s (GCMC) bariatric surgery program, a nationally-accredited program designed specifically for severely obese patients. GCMC’s program offers a multidisciplinary approach to pre- and post-operative care that includes medical and behavior health specialists, dieticians, exercise programs and patient support groups.
Board certified in surgery, Dr. Horsley earned his medical degree from West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed a residency in general surgery at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, and a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons, American Osteopathic Association, Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association, Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.
As part of Geisinger’s Center for Nutrition, Weight Management and Metabolic Surgery, GCMC’s program incorporates obesity medicine specialist Jila Kaberi-Otarod, M.D., registered dieticians, clinical nurse specialists, physician assistants, behavioral health specialists and a bariatric nurse coordinator to create a care plan tailored to each patient’s individual needs. The program offers an entire pathway of care that starts with a full medical screening and evaluation by a registered dietitian. Patients receive several months of care, including behavior modification strategies, nutrition and exercise therapy and group educational services before their surgery. The surgery is done minimally invasively with most patients staying in the hospital one or two days.
“Most surgical programs start with surgery,” explained Dr. Horsley. “Our approach focuses on the patient and not just on the surgical aspects. We want the patient to be as healthy as possible before surgery. We are dedicated to caring for our patients after surgery, not only in the first weeks and months but for their lifetime. We make a 100 percent commitment to the entire patient experience because we know it can improve outcomes.”
Dr. Horsley sees patients at Geisinger Mt. Pleasant, Scranton, and Geisinger Mt. Pocono, and performs surgeries at GCMC. Dr. Otarod sees patients at Geisinger Mt. Pleasant and Geisinger Wyoming Valley, Wilkes-Barre. To schedule a consultation for Geisinger’s bariatric program, please call 844-703-4262.
Geisinger is recognized as a national quality leader in bariatric surgery, and GCMC is the only location in Lackawanna County to be nationally accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program, a joint program of the American College of Surgeons and American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. This distinction recognizes comprehensive bariatric surgery programs which meet the highest standards for patient safety and quality.
