LEWISTOWN, Pa. – Geisinger Lewistown Auxiliary is hosting its annual Sporting Clay Shoot on Saturday, May 19, at the East End Blue Rock Sportsman's Club, Milroy. Proceeds from this year's event will support Geisinger's Fresh Food Farmacy program that will be launched in Lewistown in June 2018.

Through the program, patients who are identified as having HBA1C levels greater than 8 and as being food insecure are referred by their primary care physician for the Fresh Food Farmacy. Once enrolled, patients receive more than 20 hours of diabetes education with Geisinger health coaches. Each week, patients will receive enough food to prepare healthy and nutritious meals for their whole family, twice a day for five days.

Sponsorship opportunities for this event are available for individuals and organizations and information must be received no later than Friday, May 4.

Competition for individual shooters will begin at 9 a.m. Shooters will be grouped into squads of five and will shoot one round, 50 birds total. Participants are required to bring their own gun, ammunition, safety glasses and earplugs. While shooters of all levels and abilities are welcome, gun safety knowledge is required.

“Many patients lack access to healthy food or cannot afford it,” said Kirk Thomas, Geisinger Western Region chief administrative officer. “The Fresh Food Farmacy’s goal is to help diabetes patients manage their health through, free, nutritional food. Geisinger's “food as medicine” approach puts research into action, combating high obesity rates and diabetes by providing fresh, healthy food to those most in need. We hope that the Clay Shoot can help channel funds into this program and thus benefit the community".

The Fresh Food Farmacy is an example of the Geisinger Medical Home model which brings team members together, working collaboratively to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
