LEWISTOWN, Pa.Geisinger Lewistown Hospital is now accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education to run the Lewistown Rural Family Medicine Residency Program beginning this July. The program is a collaborative effort between Geisinger and Family Practice Center (FPC). The program’s inception is a direct result of Geisinger’s strategic process to identify where the greatest needs are in the communities it serves and how to address them through training physicians.

The Lewistown Rural Family Medicine Residency Program will work to provide a unique rural-based learning experience to train the next generation of family physicians. Throughout their experience, residents will be embedded in existing FPC family practice offices for continuity clinic. Additionally, they will be embedded in specialty clinics and care for patients within a hospital setting at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.

Kirk Thomas, chief administrative officer, Geisinger Western Region said, “In an effort to address the shortage of primary care physicians in rural areas, this program aims to recruit and train physicians with a keen interest in rural family medicine. We are looking forward to this new venture in Lewistown and are excited to welcome the first class of residents to our area and the system, in partnership with FPC”, he said.

The program will accept four residents each year, with an eventual cap at 12 residents total for the 3-year program. Sireesha Vemuri-Reddy, MD, is the program’s director, Mandy Maneval, MD, PhD. is the Associate Program Director and Stephanie Bilger is the program’s Administrator.
