,
LEWISTOWN, Pa. – Geisinger Lewistown Hospital invites people with diabetes to attend a series of diabetes education classes to learn how to manage diabetes and be healthy. Diabetes education helps people lower their blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels. Classes will be taught by diabetes educators who are experienced health care professionals who specialize in helping people with diabetes. Classes will be held every Thursday morning in September from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Diabetes is among the top 10 causes of death in the nation. According to the American Diabetes Association, diabetes and pre-diabetes affect more than 110 million Americans and cost 332 billion dollars per year. Diabetes can cause several serious complications. Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, is largely preventable through diet and exercise.
Lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating healthy, and increasing physical activity can dramatically reduce the progression of type 2 diabetes and are important to controlling type 1 diabetes. Class topics include healthy eating, being active, monitoring, taking medications, reducing risks, and problem solving.
Classes attended will be billed to participants insurance. Attendees are advised to check with their insurance regarding coverage. Registration is required. A person may attend any one class or all classes. For more information, contact Pat Wolf BS, Registered Nurse, CDE at 717-242-7198.
