MOUNT UNION, Pa. –  Answering a need in the community, Geisinger recently expanded its Women’s Health services to the Mount Union Area Medical Center at 95 S. Park St. in Mount Union, enabling expecting mothers to see a Geisinger Women’s Health provider close to home in Mount Union and deliver their babies at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.

Without convenient, local access to services, expecting mothers often arrive at their due date with little or no prenatal care, which increases the risk for complications for both mother and baby. Geisinger’s outreach to provide prenatal obstetrical care in Mount Union is designed to minimize that risk.

“Rural medical facilities often struggle with providing the wide variety of services their patients need,” said Carol Knouse, operations manager, Geisinger Women’s Health. “And with many hospitals closing their obstetrics units, women in rural areas are forced to travel significant distances for care. Partnering with Mount Union Medical Center, we can bring much needed prenatal care to the local community. We look forward to working closely with them to increase the amount of services we offer.”

Geisinger expanded midwifery services to its Cold Springs Clinic in Huntingdon last year. Midwife services are also available to those in Mifflin, Juniata and Centre counties. Geisinger midwives focus on what mothers can do naturally during labor and delivery and empower them to take charge of their bodies.

The Family Place maternity program at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital delivered 575 babies last year. The unit was recently upgraded to provide greater comfort and includes both physicians and certified nurse midwives who deliver babies.
