Survey looks at innovation, care and leadership

DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger has been ranked by industry peers as being one of the top five most innovative health care organizations in the country. A recent survey of more than 300 health care leaders ranked organizations based on innovation, leadership, and cost and quality of care.

According to the survey conducted by Reaction Data, Geisinger ranked fifth overall when naming a health care system that comes to mind for innovation. Many of the respondents were chief executive officers, but the group included chief medical officers, patient quality officials and other industry leaders. Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, Intermountain Health, Kaiser Permanente and Johns Hopkins also made the list.

The 2019 survey received 341 responses from health care leadership. In addition to innovation, Geisinger received top five marks for being a health care system delivering a high quality of care at a sustainable cost and for thought leadership surrounding health care transformation.

Geisinger has a long-standing national reputation for implementing successful innovation. Geisinger is home to the MyCode Community Health Initiative, a growing research project with 250,000 participants that make up the world’s largest biobank. Geisinger is also known for addressing diabetes by creating the Fresh Food Farmacy, which provides food and education to patients with diabetes and food insecurity. Recently, the system announced several new innovations that include the addition of DNA sequencing as part of routine primary care, changing the way surgery is performed through ProvenRecovery, taking health care to patients’ front doors through Geisinger at Home, addressing the opioid epidemic through the Free2BMom initiative, and participating in the Pennsylvania Rural Health Model, an initiative to preserve rural hospitals.

“It's an honor to be listed in the top five most innovative health systems, as ranked by other health care leaders,” said Jaewon Ryu, MD, Geisinger’s interim president and chief executive officer. “From our work on social determinants of health to integrating genetic testing into routine clinical care to providing care in the homes of those most in need, we are challenging the role of health care systems in care delivery. Together, I believe we’re moving the needle forward on value-based care and improving the patient experience.”

Within the past year, Geisinger has pushed innovation further by announcing the creation of the Geisinger Steele Institute for Health Innovation. The institute will guide the enterprise in developing innovative approaches to solving the most pressing challenges facing the health care industry.

“Innovation at Geisinger means taking a fundamentally different approach to solving problems facing our patients, members, health system and communities,” said Karen Murphy, RN, PhD, Geisinger executive vice present and chief innovation officer. “As an integrated health care delivery system, we have the opportunity to address complex issues in using a comprehensive approach.”

The top health care innovators are the organizations that are moving the industry forward, according to Reaction Data. These organizations are those sitting at the forefront of adopting and implementing new methodologies and technologies.
