LEWISTOWN, Pa. – Geisinger Lewistown Hospital ranks among the top 100 rural and community hospitals in the United States, according to the Chartis Group, the nation's largest independent healthcare advisory firm. Regarded as one of the industry’s most significant designations of performance excellence, the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals list is based on the results of the Hospital Strength INDEX® from iVantage Health Analytics.

The Chartis Center for Rural Health made its rankings on eight key performance areas defined by the index, including inpatient market share, outpatient market share, quality, outcomes, patient perspective, cost, charge and financial efficiency. Geisinger Lewistown Hospital’s scores in these areas earned the inclusion in the center’s exclusive list.

According to the American Hospital Association, there are currently 1,805 rural community hospitals in the United States, which puts Geisinger Lewistown Hospital in the top 5% of rural community hospitals nationwide.

“It's a great honor for the entire team at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital to receive this national recognition. This past year has been challenging, but it also brought out a spirit of teamwork, resilience, compassion and kindness. It is my privilege to work alongside these highly capable health care professionals and staff,” said Kirk Thomas, chief administrative officer for Geisinger’s Western Region. “Our source of inspiration and motivation is the community that rallied to support our health care heroes. We aim to serve them with all our capabilities and bring world-class health care to them, closer to home."

The recognition illustrates the value that these rural facilities have to their communities. Amid uncertainty, transition and strain, these top performers excel in managing risk, achieving higher quality, securing better outcomes, increasing patient satisfaction and operating at a lower cost than their peers.

“In an era of downward pressure on rural hospital revenues, our yearly Top 100 lists are established across the industry as a bellwether for provider performance,” said Michael Topchik, National Leader of the Chartis Center for Rural Health. “From one year to the next, the Top 100 lists are never static, which we see as a strong indicator of how proactive hospitals are when it comes to pushing for performance improvement in key areas such as quality, outcomes, patient safety, market share and finance. We’re delighted to recognize this year’s Top 100 rural providers and showcase their efforts to deliver quality care efficiently and cost-effectively.”

Geisinger Lewistown Hospital and the rest of the recognized hospitals serve as a benchmark for other rural facilities as they strive to achieve similar results and provide a blueprint for successfully navigating uncertain times in health care.
