STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Sabrina Whitehurst, M.D., Geisinger obstetrics and gynecology physician and director of women’s health for Geisinger’s western region, was recently honored as part of the state’s Female Veterans Day Virtual Ceremony.

Dr. Whitehurst, a 10-year U.S Army veteran, was honored during a virtual ceremony held by the Pennsylvania Commission for Women, which was hosted by Gov. Tom Wolf and First Lady Frances Wolfe. The annual event recognizes women in the commonwealth who served their country in the military.

Dr. Whitehurst, a Penn State and Howard University College of Medicine graduate, continues to serve her community at Gray’s Woods clinic and Geisinger Lewistown Hospital, while maintaining her commission in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel.

“When you’re doing what you love with teammates who feel like they’re family, you know you’re in the right place,” said Dr. Whitehurst. “I felt that in the Army, and I feel it now at Geisinger. I’m honored to receive this recognition and applaud the efforts of my colleagues both in medicine and the Armed Forces.”

Designated a 2021 Military Friendly Employer by Viqtory Media, Geisinger continues to introduce programs and services to support its veteran employees and the issues that are important to them. Through the efforts of our veteran employee resource group, VetNet, Geisinger implemented a two-week paid leave benefit for employees serving in the Reserves or the National Guard.
