Two Geisinger hospitals receive maternity services recognition from U.S. News & World Report
DANVILLE, Pa. – Two Geisinger hospitals were recognized by U.S. News & World Report as 2024 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care. Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital earned the highest award, being named a High Performing hospital for Maternity Care (Uncomplicated Pregnancy), while Geisinger Lewistown Hospital earned an inaugural designation as a Maternity Care Access Hospital.
“This is an honor to our labor and delivery teams at Bloomsburg and Lewistown for their hard work to provide the best maternity care to our patients,” said Sandra Culbertson, M.D., chair of the Geisinger Women & Children’s Institute. “Our maternity teams are committed to delivering the highest quality maternity care every day. We are thankful for this recognition that will most certainly motivate our teams to continue to offer excellent service to our communities.”
For the third consecutive year, Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital received the High Performing designation. The annual evaluation is based on objective measures of quality, including C-section rates in lower-risk pregnancies, newborn complication rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, early elective delivery rates, birthing-friendly practices and transparency on racial/ethnic disparities and other measures.
“This type of recognition validates the care that all the nurses and providers strive to give each day. Each member of our care team contributes to the superb care that our patients receive,” said Brenda Albertson, operations manager for nursing at Geisinger Bloomsburg. “The team has so much passion for the care they provide and are getting the recognition they deserve.”
Geisinger Lewistown Hospital was one of only 73 hospitals in the nation to receive the Maternity Care Access Hospital recognition. The designation is based on a number of measures, including geographic isolation, number of obstetric providers per 10,000 births and hospital quality and was given to hospitals that provide vital maternity care in communities that would otherwise be maternity care deserts.
