Geisinger Commonwealth recognized for commitment to better experiences, outcomes for first-generation college students
SCRANTON – FirstGen Forward recently accepted Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine into the FirstGen Forward Network, a coalition of schools working to make sure first-gen students succeed academically and socially.
To be selected as a FirstGen Forward Network member, the school demonstrated a commitment to improving experiences and advancing success for first-generation college students.
The designation is especially important to Geisinger Commonwealth, according to Tanja Adonizio, MD, student affairs provost for Geisinger College of Health Sciences. The school’s priority is educating local students who will practice here after graduation. Many of these students are the first in their families to attend college or medical school.
“At Geisinger, we are committed to meeting the needs of our community,” Adonizio said. “One great need is access to excellent healthcare. Students from the communities we serve are most likely to remain here to care for their neighbors. We are prepared to provide the guidance and support these students need to achieve their dreams.”
The network helps schools transform the first-gen experience, so students succeed academically and socially. To date, 429 institutions of higher education, including two statewide systems, have entered the network, representing 49 states and the District of Columbia.
“We are pleased to welcome Geisinger Commonwealth,” said Dr. Stephanie J. Bannister, vice president with FirstGen Forward. “Geisinger is not only taking steps to serve first-generation students but is prepared to make a long-term commitment and employ strategies that foster an environment of success for this important population.”
In June, selected institutions participated in a kick-off event that allowed faculty and staff to start discussions with members of peer institutions. Going forward, Geisinger Commonwealth will participate in monthly calls, professional development, goal setting, blog development, annual reporting and more.
“Being part of the FirstGen Forward Network is an exciting opportunity for Geisinger to join a nationwide community advancing the success of first-generation students,” said Maurice Jones, CEO of FirstGen Forward. “We know Geisinger will be a significant contributor.”
