Demolition of Dickey Clinic, MRI building begins in March

DANVILLE, Pa. – Geisinger is set to officially start site preparation work for a multi-year expansion project on its Geisinger Medical Center campus that will begin with the demolition of two buildings starting in March. This will clear the way for crews to begin construction this summer on a new 11-story patient tower and parking garage near the front of the hospital — the largest project in the 110-year history of the Danville hospital.

“This expansion is important to continue our organization’s legacy of providing high-level, convenient care to our neighbors throughout the region,” said Megan Brosious, chief administrative officer of Geisinger’s central region. “Construction may cause some disruptions, but the good news is patients will still get the same great care they’ve come to expect from us over the past century — even during construction.”

The multi-year project is already underway with ongoing interior work to prepare for the Dickey Clinic and MRI building demolition, which is expected to be completed later this spring. Work also continues on a road relocation project to create a two-way traffic pattern that will complement the campus’ future layout and design with the new patient tower and parking garage.

Once the road project is complete in March, the pedestrian sidewalk leading up Medical Center Drive toward the hospital’s Abigail (main) entrance will be closed. The main and Foss Clinic entrances will remain open, and drivers can still drop off/pick up and use valet parking in front of the hospital during this time. Visitors parking in the hospital’s main parking area should use the Hospital for Advanced Medicine to access all parts of the hospital. The emergency room will remain open in its current location throughout construction.

Once complete, the expansion project will dramatically alter and improve the Geisinger Medical Center campus to provide a modern, comforting environment for patients, visitors and staff. When it opens, the new tower will feature a larger emergency room that will double the square footage of the current space and increase it from 45 to 60 beds.

Updated intensive care units and operating suites will meet the future health needs of the region. The hospital’s adult medical-surgical unit rooms will convert to all private beds to provide privacy and more space for patients and caregivers.

This project complements the services Geisinger provides throughout the region, including at Geisinger Shamokin Area Community Hospital and Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital.

Anyone visiting Geisinger Medical Center should allow extra time for travel in case of construction delays and should follow directional signage throughout the project. The tower is expected to be complete and open to patients by 2029.
