Geisinger Community Medical Center expands inpatient care
SCRANTON, Pa. – Geisinger Community Medical Center opened a newly renovated 22-bed unit for medical-surgical inpatients on Monday, Feb. 3
Renovation of the former behavioral health unit began last summer and was made possible by the opening of Geisinger Behavioral Health Center Northeast in August 2023. Geisinger Community Medical Center regularly operates at or above capacity to serve the Lackawanna County community and surrounding areas, and this expansion increases the hospital’s inpatient capacity by 8%.
“As we see the health care needs of our community continue to grow, it’s critical that we use the resources we have to expand our capabilities,” said Nick Coleman, associate vice president of clinical operations in Geisinger’s northeast region. “By moving behavioral health services to a state-of-the-art standalone facility in Moosic, we’ve been able to repurpose needed space to house more inpatient care at our medical center.”
Beyond increasing inpatient capacity, the 22 added beds have the potential to relieve pressure from the hospital’s emergency room and improve daily operations by allowing for more timely movement of patients to appropriate levels of care.
