Geisinger Cancer Center Dickson City expected to open in June

DICKSON CITY, Pa. – More than 50 Geisinger employees were joined by about a dozen community partners from the borough and Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce during a milestone celebration on March 5 at Geisinger Cancer Center Dickson City.

Construction on the new facility has rapidly progressed over the last year. Between early December and the beginning of March, a segment of the cancer center’s drywall was displayed in the Geisinger Community Medical Center lobby, where dozens of employees signed it to symbolize their role in Geisinger’s growth.

“The compassionate care you provide every day encourages people in our region to increasingly trust us with their care year after year,” said Ron Beer, chief administrative officer of Geisinger’s northeast region. “It is our employees who make Geisinger so special. None of this is possible without you.”

During the ceremony, employees and community partners who had not signed the wall were invited to leave their mark. The segment will be sealed up in the walls of the cancer center as work continues, commemorating the moment and leaving a token for posterity

“Without strong relationships in our community, we can’t follow through on projects like this,” Beer noted. “Dickson City has welcomed our efforts to expand care in Lackawanna County, and the Chamber of Commerce continues to be a great partner to Geisinger.”

The new cancer center will expand Geisinger’s hematology-oncology, infusion and palliative medicine services in Lackawanna County. The 61,000-square-foot facility, expected to see its first patients in June, will also provide radiation oncology care — a first for Geisinger in the county — and have dedicated space for multidisciplinary care.

“Geisinger Cancer Center Dickson City will have the space, resources and technology our care teams need. We will deliver specialized care, close to home, for people in Lackawanna County and surrounding communities,” said Rajiv Panikkar, M.D., chair of Geisinger’s Cancer Institute. “Our outstanding providers and specially trained support staff are the heart of our program, and we’re here to honor them today.”
