Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency

Join a program where you’ll be part of the team.

About us

When you join the Geisinger oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program, you’ll have the opportunity to serve a hugely diverse population and treat interesting and rare cases — all while enjoying one of the most collaborative education experiences available.

We pride ourselves on our strong support for residents and accept only two per year. Here, you’ll work with American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) board-certified faculty to gain extensive operative experience and level-appropriate surgical autonomy.

Geisinger serves a population of approximately 1.3 million patients in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. As you rotate through Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre and Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton, you’ll gain experience at both Level I and Level II trauma centers. Our scope of practice includes dentoalveolar, implants, outpatient anesthesia, orthognathic surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, TMJ (i.e., minimally invasive arthroscopy and total alloplastic joint reconstruction), trauma, benign/malignant pathology, salivary gland surgery (i.e., minimally invasive sialendoscopy and major salivary gland surgery), complex reconstructive surgery (i.e., microvascular surgery and nerve reconstruction) and multidisciplinary secondary cleft and craniofacial surgery.

As a resident, you’ll do more than build expertise. You’ll have the chance to live your life fully thanks to our locations in central and northeastern Pennsylvania, where outdoor recreation abounds, the cost of living is low and the tight-knit communities are friendly. This is your opportunity to create the balance that will serve you the rest of your career.

Program director's message

Greetings, and thank you for considering Geisinger’s oral and maxillofacial surgery residency program!

For over 20 years, full-time OMS providers have been an integral part of Geisinger, offering complex, full-scope services to northeastern and central Pennsylvania while building a solid foundation for the development of a comprehensive residency program.

Established and accredited in 2016, the four-year, single-degree OMS program has been overwhelmingly successful and growing exponentially.

With our compassionate, dedicated and board-certified faculty, you’ll experience the full breadth of practice that oral and maxillofacial surgery has to offer. We’re actively recruiting faculty to support our impressive program expansion and patient volumes at three regional trauma centers. As a healthcare system, Geisinger eagerly provides the resources and cutting-edge technology necessary to support our endeavors.

In our program, we’re proud of the impact our residents and graduates have on our patients, community and specialty. We appreciate your interest — and we look forward to meeting you!

Sincerely,
Paul Covello, MD, DDS, FACS
