Podiatry Residency

Our multidisciplinary approach makes all the difference.

About us

Ellianne Nasser, DPM, CWS, FACFAS, program director

When you choose a Geisinger podiatry and surgical residency, you’ll do so much more than train in the basics — you’ll develop critical skills in multiple disciplines that will inform and shape the way you practice, now and in the future.

As a resident training in a Level II trauma center with a podiatric foot and ankle service, you’ll gain access to some of the toughest medical and surgical cases we accept. Geisinger is known for its approach to limb preservation and salvage techniques, with special emphasis on diabetic Charcot foot and ankle, including Ilizarov external fixation application. You’ll work through rotations in wound care and hyperbaric medicine, too.

And you’ll also benefit from our residency’s excellent working relationship with other departments. Rotations in orthopaedic surgery, vascular surgery and plastic surgery will complement your podiatric training, and our thorough approach includes rotations in emergency medicine, internal medicine, behavioral medicine, pathology, infectious diseases, anesthesia and pain management, and radiology.

We’re particularly proud of our evidence-based medicine approach to patient care. You’ll join your fellow residents in a weekly journal club, case discussions, resident presentations, hands-on workshops and cadaver labs. But you’ll have the opportunity to share beyond your Geisinger colleagues — we encourage original research projects and support our residents when they present at national meetings.

Our home is a strength, as well. Northeastern Pennsylvania offers all the ease of small-town living with unbeatable access to both outdoor recreation and the urban centers of New York City and Philadelphia. This is a place where you can live well — and make a difference at the same time.

I’ve been through this program myself. I joined Geisinger following fellowship because of its stellar reputation for patient care, education and commitment to community podiatry and providers. I’m so glad I chose Geisinger. I hope you will, too.

Message from the chair

Geisinger is the ideal place to train, offering both the comforts of living in northeastern Pennsylvania with the rigors of working in a not-for-profit, fully integrated health service organization that serves upwards of 1 million residents in 45 counties. Here, you’ll work with colleagues who prize excellence in care, education, research and service.

Our physician-led system includes a multidisciplinary physician group practice with systemwide-aligned goals, successful clinical programs, a sophisticated information technology platform, a robust research program and Geisinger Health Plan.

At the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute, our goals are to provide the highest-quality patient care, improve mobility and enhance the quality of life for all, while advancing the science of musculoskeletal surgery and its related disciplines through research and education. Excellence pervades our patient care, teaching, learning, opportunities and diversity. We stand ready to achieve prominence through a mindset of “all things possible.”

Our podiatry residency focuses on optimizing didactic, clinical and surgical excellence through a robust curriculum. Our residents rotate throughout the Geisinger system, allowing for increased surgical volume and access to broad patient demographics. Our weekly didactics are complemented by monthly hands-on skills labs, including quarterly cadaver labs. Plus, our internal research infrastructure enhances the overall education experience.

Thanks for visiting our website, and I invite you to explore what sets our Podiatry Residency program apart.
