Professional Orthopaedic Associates joining Geisinger

SCRANTON, Pa. – Professional Orthopaedic Associates, Scranton’s longest-standing and most established orthopaedic practice in Lackawanna County, will join Geisinger, an innovative and integrated health services organization.
Board certified orthopaedic surgeons John Doherty Jr., M.D., Theodore Tomaszewski, M.D., Kevin Colleran, M.D., Jeffrey Gillette, D.O., and board certified rheumatologist Chad Walker, D.O., will officially become Geisinger physicians and faculty members of the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute effective Jan. 1, 2018. All of the practice’s 52 employees, including administrator Janet Brier and a qualified team of nurse practitioners, physician assistants and physical and occupational therapists will also become Geisinger employees effective Jan. 1.
The newly organized Institute will remain at the Ice Box Complex at 3 West Olive St., specializing in orthopaedic surgery (knee, hip and shoulder joint replacement, arthroscopy, sports medicine and fracture care) as well as rheumatology (arthritis, autoimmune disorders and osteoporosis). On-site radiology services and physical therapy are also offered.

All inpatient surgeries scheduled after Jan. 1 will be performed in the new operating suites at Geisinger Community Medical Center, located less than two miles away. The practice will also continue outpatient surgeries at the North East Surgery Center in Dickson City.
“Culturally, this practice is best aligned with Geisinger and will partner with us on the commitment we made to Scranton to expand all musculoskeletal services including our highly regarded programs in orthopaedic trauma, podiatry, wound care and sports medicine in addition to providing needed new leadership of the New Steps Joint Replacement Center at GCMC,” said Michael Suk, M.D., JD, MPH, MBA, chief physician officer and chair of Geisinger’s Musculoskeletal Institute. “These physicians are all high-quality providers with a great reputation and the staff is exceptional. We are very excited and pleased to welcome them aboard.”
Geisinger will invest $1.5 million in the practice, adding new technologies and equipment that includes the latest radiology upgrades and installing Epic’s electronic health record, the preferred electronic medical record system used by more than 250 health care organizations nationwide.

The Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute team of Greg Thomas, D.O., and Brian Campfield, M.D., Shazad Shaikh, M.D., Justin Tunis, M.D., and Ellianne Nasser, DPM, at Geisinger Community Medical Center currently offers a full program that includes orthopaedic trauma, sports medicine, podiatry and wound care. The Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute has 74 physicians and over 650 employees providing orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine, podiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation therapy across Pennsylvania. Geisinger’s Musculoskeletal delivery system will continue to focus on providing the highest quality care for every patient.
Also, as part of Geisinger's $158.6 million commitment to Northeastern Pennsylvania when it merged with GCMC in 2012, a $97.1 million campus expansion project included a new, 14-room operating suite that opened in 2015 and includes that latest in orthopaedic technology and surgical equipment.
