Angioplasty

Angioplasty restores blood flow by opening blocked arteries. We take a thin tube (catheter) with a tiny balloon and insert it into a blood vessel in your arm or groin. We then thread the tube to the artery, where the balloon inflates, widening the artery so blood can flow.

Angioplasty is a common treatment for coronary artery disease, and can restore blood flow to the heart. We also use angioplasty to treat blockages in arteries in your legs (peripheral artery disease) and your neck (carotid artery disease).

What you should know about angioplasty:

  • You will be awake during angioplasty, but your doctor will give you an anesthetic so that you do not feel pain. Most people spend the night in the hospital after angioplasty and are able to go home the next day.
  • Your doctor may also place a stent in your artery during angioplasty. This small wire mesh tube helps keep the artery open. It prevents your artery from narrowing again.
