"Everyone in Nanticoke knows and loves Helen Wilkes — and not just for her famous pierogi and pasties. She always has a spring in her step and a song in her heart, singing in the choir of St. Faustina’s Parish for 90 of her 100 years. To mark her major birthday milestone, friends and family planned a celebration befitting a centenarian at her beloved church, but as it turns out, Helen was in the hospital.
So instead, we took the party to Helen. The staff at Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre’s rehabilitation unit originally planned something small but things quickly snowballed as word spread. Her family, friends and Geisinger staff surprised her with a choir-led, Polish rendition of “Happy Birthday,” dozens of flowers and a Penn State birthday cake. “I love football. I go to my son’s house to watch all the games,” Helen said, laughing. “People are wonderful here. I think the staff is great. I think the nurses are great.” We happen to think Helen is great.
