Nurse spends time with recovering patient who spent 8 weeks in the ICU 

“It was tough to watch. He appeared depressed and was only answering with short words. I could see his spirit fading,” Daniel Serfass said, as he remembered a patient who’d been struggling with recovering for eight long winter weeks in the intensive care unit. Dan, a military veteran and an 18-year nursing veteran at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, had an idea. “I took him outside, and we enjoyed the warm spring day. We sat for a while outside and talked. He was smiling, and that day was a better day. After that, he was sitting up and playing cards. You could see his energy coming back.” Dan is one of over 200 employees at GWV who was “Caught Being Great” by his peers this year.
