“I sat my kids down and told them. And they said, ‘Mom, are you going to die?’ And I said ‘I hope not.’” Annette West, the mother of two boys, was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in February 2016. As the nurse of 24 years endured six months of chemotherapy, some days brought tears while she watched her hair fall out and her strength leave her. Her Geisinger family donated paid time off to make sure Annette's family never missed a paycheck while she fought. This helped her to dig deep as she adopted healthy habits like running, diet modification and retraining her perspective on life. Today, Annette lives cancer-free. “I was surrounded every day by such good people and I think that had a lot to do with it. I’m a different person. I seriously think there’s a reason why I got cancer. I was told to take pictures because someday I would be an advocate for someone else to make them less fearful.” #GeisingerStories
