Karen Kozar, RN, loves spending the holidays with some very special people: her patients.

The ten-year nursing veteran at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center and the mother of two young boys gets to pick her own schedule and chooses to work on days like Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“It’s rewarding to be able to care for patients during holidays because it allows me to make a big difference in their lives during special times,” she says.

Most importantly, flexible scheduling allows this busy mom to attend her boys’ school activities and other extra-curricular events.
“It’s great to be able to arrange your work calendar to meet your personal needs,” she explains.

Her husband, Dan, and the rest of her family have found fun ways to adapt to Karen’s schedule, like celebrating Thanksgiving on a Saturday or Santa arriving at their Shavertown home a day earlier than the rest of the world.

In addition to flex scheduling, Karen says teamwork, camaraderie and shared governance are also welcome perks of the job. At the age of 20, Karen joined the Geisinger team, married her high school sweetheart and bought a home. The couple also welcomed their two little boys, Mason, now 7, and Rowan, 4, to the world.

“I had the support of my Geisinger family through all these changes. We’re a team here and we work together to get things done. We take care of each other and our patients.”

When it comes to her career path, Karen says going into nursing and joining Geisinger were the best decisions she’s ever made.

“I personally feel appreciated at Geisinger. I love coming to work each day, caring for my patients, having the necessary tools and technology to do my job well, and being recognized and supported for a job well done. Geisinger provides opportunities for continuing education and advancement, lets me determine my own schedule, and gives me the chance to have an impact on key decisions. What more could I ask for? I absolutely love my job here.”
