Geisinger becomes the first member of Risant Health

Little Zachary Milewski has been a fighter since the moment he came into the world. Born with three congenital heart defects Zach was just 19 days old when he underwent open heart surgery. Zach spent the first six weeks of life in the hospital, and at eight-months-old, underwent a second open heart surgery. His parents, Steve and Sarah, recall the challenges of those early months, filled with medications, complications and hospital visits.

“There’s so many things you don’t think about,” explains Steve. “Weight gain, his immune system. We needed to keep him as healthy as possible.”

But thanks to the care of Geisinger pediatric cardiologist Dr. Karen Lurito, the soon-to-be three-year old is getting stronger everyday. Although Zach will need additional surgeries in the future, the Wyoming family is grateful for Zach’s care team, near and far, and the outpouring of support they’ve received.

“Dr. Lurito is a wonderful support for us,” says Sarah. “She’s there anytime we need her.”

Zach will lead the American Heart Association’s 2018 Northeast PA Heart Walk as the child chairman. United as ‘Team Zach Attack,’ the family will walk to support the AHA’s research of congenital heart defects and cardiovascular disease.

Karen Lurito, MD, is a pediatric cardiologist who sees patients throughout Geisinger Northeast clinics. For a referral for your child to Dr. Lurito or another Geisinger pediatric cardiologist, call 800-275-6401.
