Walking again after four years
“I could not walk and I had no hope in life,” says Sandra Diaz Caraballo of Harrisburg. In 2010, she was thrown from a balcony and fell 38 feet. She suffered two broken ankles, a fractured spine, and a broken wrist and elbow. The accident left her in a coma. "I was crushed."
After spending four years in a wheelchair, Sandra went to see orthopaedic surgeon Michael Werner, MD, at Geisinger. "Physically and mentally, I was damaged," says Sandra. “Dr. Werner gave me so much hope and faith, along with the courage to walk normal again.”
Before she saw Dr. Werner, Sandra had her ankles fused straight. He performed two major surgeries, along with additional procedures to remove the screws and hardware from her feet.
“Dr. Werner is the best! He gave me much joy and happiness. I’m walking and somewhat running again. I am so grateful. I'm full of life right now because of him," she says.
