“I never felt a lump,” says Amanda Lynn from Gouldsboro, Pa. The 59-year-old was helping her husband, who had injured his leg, when she noticed pain in her left breast. “I thought I bumped myself. I let it go for a few days, then decided to see a doctor. I explained the discomfort and was sent for a mammogram. It showed a lump on my right side. Then I had an MRI, which showed something suspicious on the left side, too. I had cancer in both breasts. At that point, I was referred to surgeon Dr. Erin Miller and she brought my whole team together.”

In addition to Erin Miller, DO, Amanda’s comprehensive team consisted of hematologist/oncologist Namita Sharma, MD, and registered nurse and breast nurse navigator Jennifer McDonald.

“Dr. Miller was fantastic. She’s down to earth and an excellent surgeon. She was so easy to talk to. And Dr. Sharma was wonderful. I knew I could go to Jennifer at any time and she’d help me. I had so much support from everyone around me — from my family to the people at the hospital. My husband is even on a first-name basis with the parking attendants,” laughs Amanda.

With a family history of breast cancer, Amanda wanted to have a mastectomy — and on May 30, 2018, she did. “I was scheduled for the mastectomy and then breast reconstruction. I eventually decided against reconstruction.

“I’m not embarrassed. I’m not ashamed. I’m still me. I’m thankful the cancer was found.”
