What is adult day care?
A valuable service that provides social activities and medical care for seniors, adult day care programs offer peace of mind for you and your family.
What is adult day care?
When a senior needs extra help during the day, adult day healthcare provides socialization and some medical services. Programs may be based in a center or they may provide in-home healthcare and services, as well as caregiver support. If you’re caring for a loved one, programs like these offer much-needed help and peace of mind as you go to work or take care of other obligations during the day.
Whether you or a loved one are just looking to make some friends or if you have more specialized health needs, an adult day care program may be the answer.
Adult day care programs fall into three main categories:
Social: These types of centers provide social activities for seniors, exercise classes, transportation and meals. They may focus on helping you or a loved one live independently with the aid of in-home help.
Medical: Facilities with medical programs offer social activities to keep seniors busy, along with skilled nursing care to help manage chronic or acute medical conditions.
Specialized care: Programs in these facilities are focused on senior health and are dedicated to treating a single condition, such as dementia or Alzheimer’s.
If you’re a caregiver, adult day care can give you confidence that your loved one is getting the help they need.
Although these types of services are not always covered by Medicare, services may be available at no cost for those who qualify for medical assistance in Pennsylvania.
Who is adult day care for?
A day care program is for ideal for seniors who:
- Are living with disabilities
- Can’t safely be left alone all day
- Have physical or cognitive limitations but don’t need 24-hour care
- Want companionship during the day
Each program is different, which means certain programs may not be right for you or your loved one. Doing your research before deciding on a program will let you focus on getting your loved one the care they need. Your doctor or local Area Agency on Aging can help point you to the right program.
