Looking for a nutritional boost? Taking a multivitamin makes it easy.

If you're considering taking a multivitamin, look no further than your local grocery store or pharmacy. Here's what to look for.

What are multivitamins?

“A multivitamin is a supplement that contains a combination of essential vitamins and minerals,” says Sarah Levenson, a pharmacist at Geisinger. These nutrients work together to support healthy body functions.

Multivitamins contain a variety of nutrients, including:

  • Vitamin C
  • Calcium
  • Folate
  • Magnesium
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin D
  • Zinc

Why are multivitamins important?

This powerful supplement wears a lot of hats. Multivitamins can help with:

Filling in nutritional gaps

Not everyone gets the nutrition they need from their diet. That’s where multivitamins come in.

“Taking a multivitamin can help you get your recommended daily amount of necessary vitamins and minerals,” Ms. Levenson says. “It’s also good to take a multivitamin if you’re vegan or have had weight loss surgery.”

Supporting healthy pregnancy

Prenatal vitamins are multivitamins specially designed for pregnant people. They deliver the extra nutrients your body needs to support a developing baby.

“Getting enough folate, a B vitamin, is especially important for people who may become pregnant, since it can help lower the risk of birth defects,” says Ms. Levenson.

Helping with digestive issues

Certain digestive conditions can affect how well our bodies absorb nutrients from food — especially vitamins B and C. Conditions that can interfere with nutrient absorption include:

  • Celiac disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Excessive diarrhea or vomiting

A multivitamin can replace what’s lost and help restore proper nutrient levels.

Replacing lost nutrients from medications

Another thing that can interfere with our bodies' nutrient levels? Taking certain medications. “Some blood pressure medicines can deplete levels of magnesium, potassium and calcium,” Ms. Levenson says. “And acid reflux medicines can lower levels of vitamin B12, calcium and magnesium.”

If you’re taking medications long term, talk to your healthcare provider. They may order bloodwork to check nutrient levels and make suggestions to help.

Multivitamins can also be beneficial if you:

  • Smoke
  • Drink alcohol excessively
  • Don’t get enough rest
  • Are over 50

They also help your body run more efficiently. Other benefits of multivitamins include:

  • Supporting healthy brain function
  • Improving energy levels
  • Improving your skin’s appearance
  • Boosting immune health
  • Protecting teeth and bones

What to look for

Not all multivitamins are created equal. Go to any store and you’ll find an endless variety.

You’ll find them in different forms like:

  • Capsules
  • Tablets
  • Gummies
  • Powder
  • Liquid

So how do you know which one to choose?

Start by reading the label. “Look for one that contains the recommended daily allowance amounts, or close to it,” says Ms. Levenson. “And choose one that bears the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) seal of approval.”

Also check to see if the vitamins are for anyone in particular. Some may be recommended for a certain sex or age group.

And if you have allergies or sensitivities, it’s a good idea to check the ingredient list. This can you help avoid potential reactions.

Ask and you will receive

If you’re considering taking a daily multi, start by talking with your healthcare provider. Depending on your health goals, they can recommend the right one for your needs.
