A non-invasive option to define and bring balance back to your face

Aging is a natural process, but the changes it brings can affect how you feel about your appearance. You may notice your skin isn’t as firm, your cheeks look less full or fine lines seem more visible.

For many people, facial sculpting offers a way to refresh their appearance without surgery.

Facial sculpting treatment focuses on areas that change most with age, like the cheeks, jawline and chin. It can restore volume, soften fine lines and refine contours while helping your face look more balanced and refreshed.

“Aging affects more than just the skin,” says Eduardo Ortiz, MD, a surgical and cosmetic dermatologist at Geisinger. “Over time, we naturally lose facial volume, and changes in skin elasticity and bone structure can alter the shape, contours and definition of the face.”

Facial sculpting works to restore those proportions with natural-looking results. But is it right for you?

What is facial sculpting?

Facial sculpting, also called facial contouring, is a group of non-surgical treatments designed to enhance your natural features and improve facial symmetry.

Common areas for treatment include:

  • Cheeks, temples and midface to restore volume and add a gentle lift
  • Jawline for a more defined, balanced profile
  • Neck and under the chin to reduce fullness and sharpen the jawline
  • Under the eyes to soften hollows and diminish a tired appearance
  • Lips to enhance shape and natural fullness

“Every face is unique, so aesthetic treatments should be highly customized to your anatomy and long-term goals,” says Dr. Ortiz.

How does facial sculpting work?

Facial sculpting typically combines treatments that enhance your features in different ways. These may include injectables like dermal fillers or Botox®, along with therapies that stimulate your body’s natural collagen production.

Most treatments are done in your doctor’s office with minimal recovery time.

“Results vary, depending on the treatment used,” says Dr. Ortiz. “Some last a few months, while others can last a couple years and require ongoing maintenance. And others are permanent changes.”

Common facial sculpting treatments

Dermal fillers

Fillers such as Juvéderm® use hyaluronic acid to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, plump lips and enhance facial contours.

Sculptra® is FDA-approved and works differently by stimulating collagen production over time, improving skin texture and elasticity while restoring volume.

“Dermal fillers can last between 6 and 18 months, with some lasting up to 2 years or longer,” says Dr. Ortiz. “It depends on the type used and the area treated.”

Botox

Botox is used to soften dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial movements, like frown lines, forehead creases and crow’s feet.

It’s an FDA-approved prescription medication that uses botulinum, a naturally occurring neurotoxin, to temporarily relax targeted muscles, helping the skin appear smoother. It also softens a square jawline by relaxing jaw muscles.

Results typically last up to 4 months, sometimes longer.

Kybella

An FDA-approved injectable, Kybella® targets fullness under the chin. It uses a synthetic version of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that helps break down fat in the body. When injected under the chin, it destroys fat cells, which are then naturally eliminated by the body.

Most people need a series of treatments for best results, but once the fat cells are gone, results are permanent.

Radiofrequency or ultrasound therapies

These therapies use heat to stimulate your body’s natural collagen production and improve skin firmness over time.

Options may include:

  • Microneedling: Using controlled microscopic injuries, stimulates collagen and elastin to improve texture and reduce large pores and scars.
  • Morpheus8: Combines microneedling and radiofrequency to tighten and smooth skin.
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP): Uses your own blood components to rejuvenate skin and improve skin tone, texture and overall radiance.
  • Laser therapy: Delivers energy into your cells to improve tone, redness and sun damage.

“Dermal fillers and Botox can take effect quickly, while energy-based treatments improve gradually as collagen remodels over weeks to months,” says Dr. Ortiz.

Benefits of facial sculpting

“Facial sculpting can be an excellent non-surgical option for anti-aging,” says Dr. Ortiz. “The most successful treatments enhance existing features, rather than overpower them.”

Key benefits include:

  • Natural-looking enhancement: Supports your features without looking overdone.
  • Customized care: Treatments are tailored to your goals.
  • Minimally invasive: No incisions or anesthesia, with minimal downtime.
  • Confidence boost: Helps you feel more like yourself.

Possible side effects

Just like any medical procedure, facial sculpting may have side effects.

Common side effects include:

  • Mild bruising, swelling or redness
  • Tenderness at treatment sites
  • Temporary asymmetry

Less common side effects include infection, lumps or nodules, product migration, prolonged swelling or allergic reactions.

Serious side effects are rare when performed by a trained medical provider.

“These products and procedures are FDA-approved and highly regulated, making them very safe for use,” says Dr. Ortiz. “To minimize risks, a trained medical provider will review your medical history and any medications you’re taking to ensure your overall treatment plan fits your goals and safety profile.”

Is facial sculpting right for you?

Facial sculpting may be a good option if you’re looking for subtle improvements to your jawline, chin, cheeks and under eyes.

The best way to know if it’s right for you is through a consultation with a qualified provider. They’ll evaluate your facial structure, review your medical history and help you choose a plan that fits your goals.

“Just remember: The decision to pursue facial sculpting is a personal one,” says Dr. Ortiz. “The goal should never be to meet someone else’s standards or expectations, only your own.”

Whether you’re considering a small change or a comprehensive plan, facial sculpting is about helping you look refreshed and feel confident in your own skin.
