Applying simulation modeling to quantify the impact of population health and capacity interventions on hospital bed demand
An inherent issue in many healthcare systems is the mismatch between patient demand and bed capacity, which has serious implications on hospital access, quality of care, patient satisfaction and operating costs. Various population health interventions and bed capacity increases have been considered, but none implemented due to the uncertainty of long-term success in managing hospital capacity. The purpose of this project was to quantify the impact of select population health and bed volume increases on hospital capacity. A Monte Carlo simulation model was developed to forecast expected daily bed demand and bed savings with the implementation of the select interventions.
