Regular breast imaging and screening can detect cancer before symptoms appear. Early diagnosis of breast cancer makes it easier to treat and increases your chances of survival. Geisinger offers state-of-the-art breast imaging, screening and diagnostic services.

Screenings begin with a clinical breast exam and a mammogram, or X-ray of your breast tissue. In addition to cancer, imaging can detect and diagnose non-cancerous (benign) breast diseases such as cysts, lumps and nipple discharge. It can also pinpoint the cause of any pain.

What you should know about breast imaging

  • The American College of Radiology and other leading health care organizations recommend yearly screening mammograms beginning at age 40. Your doctor may recommend starting earlier if you have a family history or other high-risk factors.
  • Breast imaging such as mammography is used to screen and diagnose women for breast abnormalities. If a mammogram reveals a suspicious finding, your doctor may order other tests to help diagnosis the abnormality. Tests include an MRI, breast ultrasound or biopsy.

    • 3-D mammograms (tomosynthesis): The most advanced type of mammogram, it is especially useful for detecting small cancers and abnormalities in dense breast tissue.
    • Breast MRI: Magnetic resonance imaging is a non-invasive test used in addition to mammography. We screen women who are at high risk for breast cancer and also use it to diagnosis and evaluate the extent of breast cancer.
    • Breast ultrasound: This non-invasive test uses sound waves to create an internal image of your breast. It’s used to help diagnose an abnormality found during a mammogram or breast MRI.
  • High-Risk Breast Clinic: Women with dense breasts have two to three times the risk of developing breast cancer as those with normal tissue density. Our High-Risk Breast Clinic can evaluate and make screening recommendations for women with dense breasts and other risk factors.
  • Minimally invasive biopsies: In addition to surgical biopsies, Geisinger doctors perform several types of minimally invasive biopsies to diagnose breast cancer:
    • Stereotactic biopsies
    • Ultrasound-guided biopsies
    • MRI-guided biopsies
