Skin and toenail problems
Certain skin and toenail problems may require special attention to keep your feet in good condition. Our podiatry specialists can diagnose and treat a range of conditions, including fungal infections, plantar warts, blisters, corns and calluses to keep you active and healthy.
What you should know about skin and toenail problems
- Fungal nail disease and fungal infections such as athlete's foot cause peeling, redness, itching and burning. An antifungal medication may be taken orally or applied to the affected skin to typically treat these symptoms.
- Plantar warts are hard, grainy growths on the bottom of the foot. Plantar warts and other warts on the foot are commonly treated with medicine such as salicylic acid that removes the wart by layers. Other treatments for warts include freezing therapy or laser therapy.
- Corns and calluses are thick, hardened layers of skin that develop due to repeated friction and pressure. Common treatments include trimming away excess skin, using salicylic acid to remove the calluses, using shoe inserts or, in severe instances, surgery.
