Geisinger becomes the first member of Risant Health

“The week before Christmas, I needed another biopsy. I’ve had multiple breast biopsies before on my right side, and this was the first time I needed one on the left,” explained Michele Gawal. Her story began in 1990 after her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Michele started getting mammograms, and after abnormal results came more frequently, the registered nurse at Scranton’s GCMC began considering a mastectomy. “I have access to the doctors at the hospital. And I asked Dr. Bormes what he thought of the radical procedure. He asked, ‘Why are you waiting to get breast cancer?’” With the support and encouragement of her husband, sons and doctors, Michele made the decision to move forward with a double mastectomy, and underwent surgery on July 27th. Michele admits that the decision and recovery was not easy, but says, “Right now, I’m in good health. I look in the mirror and I am so relieved. Now, I have peace of mind, and it was right for me.” #GeisingerStories
