Geisinger becomes the first member of Risant Health

“I have two saviors in this world. Dr. Lacroix is one.” Bill Welliver’s life took an unexpected turn last November when the 68-year old grandfather of seven suddenly passed out. “I kept trying to grab an item with my left hand, but couldn’t. A few minutes later, I was on the floor.” A brain scan revealed a stage 4 glioblastoma tumor– a very aggressive form of brain cancer. Just one week later, the West Wyoming resident was having brain surgery to remove the tumor performed by Geisinger neurosurgeon Dr. Michel Lacroix. Under the watchful care of his Geisinger team, including radiation oncologist Dr. Robert Rostock and neurologist Dr. Scott Turner, Bill underwent chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Afterwards, he was fit with the cap-like Optune device he now wears 23 hours a day. The device emits an electromagnetic field to control the tumor’s growth. The avid fisherman and family man says wearing the cap is a small concession to continue enjoying his hobbies and daily life. “I still fish, just not alone. I still do yard work and grocery shop for my wife. I look at our family. They’re what keeps me going.” #GeisingerStories
