Geisinger becomes the first member of Risant Health

“I was unhappy with my weight and borderline diabetic,” says Kim Peterman of Montoursville.
With a family history of diabetes, she knew she needed to lose weight.

“All of my older siblings have diabetes, and I had considered bariatric surgery for a long time,” says Kim. “It took me an entire year to come to the decision that I was going to have surgery.”

For some, bariatric surgery is the best option to maintain weight loss and, more importantly, treat and often eliminate chronic medical problems including diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels.

But weight-loss surgery is not a “quick fix.” Deciding to have surgery requires considerable patient preparation and a lifelong commitment to be most successful.

Geisinger bariatric surgeon Dr. Anthony Petrick gave Kim the tool she needed to kick-start her weight-loss journey. In 2008, she underwent surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.

Kim successfully lost 145 lbs. Thanks to the support group, she’s kept it off.

“It took me about 10 months before my mind could see my thinner self. But you know when it really hit me? When I was able to get in the car and not have the steering wheel rub my belly. I’m healthy now. I’m no longer at risk for diabetes.”
