Fishing can be a great way to relax — and possibly reel in dinner. Just be sure to stay safe, whether you’re boating, wading or even casting from shore.

Fishing and boat safety
Any time you’re outside near water, it makes sense to let somebody know where you’re going and when you expect to get home. If you’re boating, make sure you have enough Coast Guard-approved life jackets for everyone on board — and keep them on when you’re afloat.

Fishing fashion

Wear your gear properly. Keep suspenders and belts tightened when using waders, and don’t go in waters deeper than your boots or waders suggest. Wear lightweight clothing to protect yourself from the sun. And don’t forget a hat, sunglasses, sunblock and a towel.

Keep an eye on the sky
Rain and thunderstorms can pop up quickly in spring and summer, so head for shelter if you see black clouds gathering. And remember, storms out of the immediate area can cause flash flooding. Check the forecast before you head out, and consider downloading a weather app with alerts that will go right to your phone.

Got hooked?

Being prepared is the best way to deal with getting hooked. Learn first aid for removing hooks before you go fishing. And don’t forget to check the date of your last tetanus shot when you get home. If it’s been more than 5 years, it’s time for a booster.
