The second annual Pacesetter 5K run/walk.

This past June, about 40 Geisinger employees laced up their sneakers on a warm Saturday morning to participate in the second annual Pacesetter 5K run/walk, an event that benefits the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata. The event was organized by Jennifer Swenson, a Wellness associate with Geisinger Health Plan.

Ms. Swenson tackled all the details for the 5K — finding a location, designing the route, working with local municipalities and first responders, soliciting and managing volunteers and vendors, and promoting the event.

“This year’s Pacesetter 5K was a tremendous success, thanks to Jennifer’s hard work and dedication,” said Mike McMonigal, executive director of the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata. “Her service was a perfect example of our valued partnership with Geisinger, which supports us through workplace campaigns, corporate contributions and events like the Pacesetter 5K. In fact, thanks to its large base of local employees at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital and Geisinger Health Plan, Geisinger is one of our top five local workplace campaigns.”

Mr. McMonigal said that proceeds from the event will help support a variety of United Way programs that align with a recent community health needs assessment conducted in cooperation with Geisinger.

“Both of our organizations have a tremendous interest in improving the health and wellness of our community, so this partnership built around a walking and running event is a natural fit,” said Mr. McMonigal.

Next up for Geisinger and the United Way of Mifflin-Juniata is the annual Day of Caring event in September. Every year, Geisinger employees give a day of their time to the United Way, participating in a variety of volunteer activities around Mifflin and Juniata counties.

“Day of Caring is the kickoff to our annual fundraising campaign,” said Mr. McMonigal. “Geisinger employees are quite generous with their time, which helps us achieve our mission of improving the education, health and financial stability of people in Mifflin and Juniata counties.”
