Primary care

A primary care provider, or PCP, is the main caregiver who manages most of your health concerns. PCPs provide checkups and screenings, as well as treatment of common illnesses and injuries.

There are three types of primary care providers:

  • Pediatric: These doctors care for children from newborns through young adults (up to age 18).
  • Family medicine: These doctors provide care for the whole family — children and adults.
  • Internal medicine: These doctors care for adults and can help you manage chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease.

Need a primary care physician? Find a doctor and call for an appointment today.

Have a health question? Call us first.

A nurse is always available at your Geisinger primary care provider’s office to answer questions and give medical advice — and that might help you avoid a costly (and unnecessary) trip to the ER.

Not sure what to do? Call your doctor’s office and ask for a nurse.

Nurse triage lines should not be used in an emergency. Call 911 or head to your nearest ER for emergency care.

Urgent and emergency care

When a sudden health issue pops up, it can be stressful. When you can’t wait for care and a primary care physician isn’t an option, where do you go? Knowing the difference between urgent care and emergency care can help you make the best choice.

When to choose urgent care:

Head to your closest Geisinger Convenient Care urgent care when you aren’t in immediate danger, but need help more quickly than you can get an appointment with your primary care physician.

Turn to urgent care for:
Colds/flu/fever/sore throats
Cuts that require stitches
Insect bites or tick removal
Sinus, ear, urinary, respiratory and other infections
Skin rashes or infections
Sprains and strains
MD Admissions

When to choose emergency care:

Head to the nearest Geisinger emergency room if you’re experiencing a life-threatening condition and need immediate help. You can also call 911 if you’re unable to drive.

Go to the ER for:

Bone breaks
Chest pain
Difficulty breathing
Fever in a newborn (less than 3 months old)
Heavy bleeding
Issues with pregnancy
Loss of consciousness
Serious head injuries
Sudden worsening of a chronic condition (e.g., asthma or allergies)
